FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Free Program on Robotic Surgery at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center
Chicago, Ill. – October 10, 2013 – Imagine test driving a robot that is actually used during minimally invasive robotic surgery. If you want to learn firsthand about the benefits of robotic surgery, don’t miss a free program, “Recover Faster with Robotic Surgery” at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (PSMEMC) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on October 24 at the Saint Mary Campus, 2233 W. Division St., Chicago. The program will be held in the main entrance lobby, first floor.
PSMEMC surgeons will discuss how this revolutionary technology is enhancing patient care for many surgeries. Participants will have an opportunity to talk with surgeons, and try out the equipment. Wine, beer and appetizers will be served during the evening.
The benefits of robotic surgery are faster recovery, less pain, smaller incisions, barely visible scars, less blood loss and a shorter hospital stay.
PSMEMC recently acquired the da Vinci Surgical System – which gives surgeons an incredibly close-up 3-D view inside the body – magnified 10 times. Designed to expand the surgeon's capabilities, the system translates hand actions into precise micro-movements of specialized instruments. Using the system, surgeons can perform complex, delicate procedures through tiny incisions.
During the procedure, a surgeon sits at a console next to the robot and controls the robotic arms with his hands. The equipment also features a monitor that provides 3-D visualization, which enhances accuracy and control so the physician can easily perform surgery. The robotic equipment also allows the surgeon to have access to hard-to-reach areas.
"We are thrilled to offer residents in our community the latest robotic surgery equipment – conveniently close to their homes,” said Martin Judd, CEO and executive vice president, PSMEMC. “We hope area residents attend the event to learn more about this technology and how it is changing surgery."
PSMEMC offers the latest in minimally invasive robotic surgery for hysterectomy; uterine fibroid removal; colon, prostate or kidney cancer; gallbladder issues and pelvic prolapse. PSMEMC has five surgeons trained and credentialed to perform robotic surgery.
