Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics Earns National Accreditation from the American College of Surgeons
Program located at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago meets all criteria as a Level 1 Center according to quality standards established by the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network.
Chicago, Illinois (November 5, 2013) – The Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital-Chicago has been accredited as a Level 1 facility under the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The accreditation signifies the surgery center’s commitment to delivering high quality care for its bariatric surgery patients.
To earn the accreditation, the Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics met the essential criteria that ensure its ability to support a bariatric surgical care program and the institutional performance requirements outlined in the BSCN Accreditation Standards. The Institute’s multidisciplinary team, which includes a specially trained dietician, nurse, psychologist, and top surgeons, have created a program that provides both the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of morbidly obese patients and the support and resources necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients, both pre- and postoperatively.
Bariatric surgery centers that are accredited under ACS BSCN program standards are part of the Metabolic Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) administered by the American College of Surgeons.
The Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics is the bariatric surgery program of Presence Health in Chicago. Under the direction of Dr. Rami Lutfi, president of the Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons (IABS) and Dr. Fred Tiesenga, secretary of the IABS, the institute performs more than 100 bariatric surgeries per year, including:
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- Gastric band placement
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Revisional surgeries, and
- Gastric plication
In the United States, more than 15 million people suffer from severe obesity, and the numbers continue to increase. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. At the present time,weight-loss surgery provides the only effective, lasting relief from severe obesity. Therefore, the ACS believes it is of utmost importance to extend its quality initiatives to accrediting bariatric surgery centers so that it can assist the public in identifying those facilities that provide optimal surgical care for patients who undergo this surgical procedure.
Level 1 programs such as the Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics meet the BSCN’s rigorous standards that ensure they provide complete care devoted to bariatric surgery. These hospitals treat more patients and can manage the most challenging and complex patients with higher levels of safe and effective outcomes.
“We are so fortunate to have physician leaders that bring world class clinical expertise and a commitment to provide an understanding and supportive environment for patients. They know the frustrations of failed weight loss plans and the life-changing impact of bariatric surgery,” stated Dr. Roberta Luskin-Hawk, Regional President of Presence Saint Joseph Hospital-Chicago and Presence Saint Francis Hospital. She added, “The program helps patients achieve their best health and the patient stories are truly inspiring.” To learn more about the Chicago Institute of Advanced Bariatrics, call 877.3.YOU.CAN (877.396.8226) or visit www.presencehealth.org/youcan.
